Many of us have sat around a campfire, telling stories. We gather in the cold, close to the fire in the forest, with flashlights and s’mores, sharing tales of ‘Candyman’, ‘the Boogeyman’, and other spooky creatures. Both adults and children remember lying in their tents, hearing animals rustling outside, and wondering if it was the monsters from the stories. Western descendants often overlook indigenous peoples worldwide who have deep connections to nature and animals. Eagles, thunderbirds, bears, and the balance of nature are all part of ancient legends that are sometimes forgotten in our modern society. As cities expand, the spiritual world is pushed aside, but in Russia, legends, and monsters remain strong and unforgettable.

In Tibet, the Sherpa people openly speak about a creature they believe is the protector and god of the mountains. This creature preys on their zapko, a beast of burden similar to a yak or cow, and sometimes on the people themselves. The Sherpa people both respect and fear this creature deeply. In the West, this creature is known as the Yeti. The existence of the Yeti was brought to attention during an expedition to Mount Everest by famous climber Eric Shipton.
