Love. Here’s the thing….
We are all guilty of dictating to others what WE BELIEVE about love. Whether it’s how you should love someone, whether or not you DO love someone, or even the old “You’re doing it wrong because….” But here’s the thing….
People are unique. We are all, each and every one of us, a one of a kind. Consider how you would feel about it if love and expressions of love were pasta sauce. Everyone knows how to make bolognaise, right? But some of us like it with more garlic than others. Some like it with parmesan cheese. Others prefer it with tasty cheese. My adopted mum puts lots of vegetables in it. The Italians don’t.
Are there universal laws to love? Yes. Things like “If you love someone, you don’t hurt them against their will” are universal law. The same as saying bolognaise sauce must contain tomato in its base. Particular things are strictly necessary for love to actually be love.
But everyone is different. And so is the way they love and/or need to be loved. I think sometimes some of us could do with a reminder of that every now and again. I mean, I’m sure you do not view having your wrists tied to their headboard and your partner spitting in your mouth as making love. But I do. I’m sure you do not view being commanded to commit various sexual acts in a public place as a hot night out, but I do.
Let’s let others love in their own way and simply accept the fact that their love is different to our own. None is more or less valid than the other. They are just unique by comparison. Just like we are.
