This is the famous quote from the Movie “Spiderman”, “With Great Power Comes Great Responsibility”. Quotes of similar nature also have their footprints in the past like, Lord Acton, who wrote that “power tends to corrupt, and absolute power corrupts absolutely” and the philosopher Socrates “rule of worthy of might,” that expressed similar ideas.

Responsibilities come along with the authority. A person having higher authority will have a higher responsibility for the Organization and society. In an Organization when an employee has been given more authority or power than the ordinary employees then he will be carrying more responsibilities than the ordinary employees.

With a Higher Authority in an Organization the employee is given an option to choose the best outcome analyzing positive and negative of the situation. Higher authority in the Organization means the authority of decision making as per the needs for higher productivity with better employee engagements.

What are the different Levels of responsibility for decision making?

  1. Higher Level Management

Responsibility: Responsibilities lies in analyzing the data and coming out with a possible solution and strategy for benefiting the Organization and Employees with a social and human touched decisions.

Authority: Analyzing the data and taking decision related to Investments, Mergers, Business Development, Manpower Planning, Productions, Quality Specification, Policy & Procedures, Sales & Marketing etc.

  1. Middle Level Management

Responsibility: Responsibility lies in gathering the accurate information while authenticating the data from the right place and at the right time and presenting the information or observations to the next level of management for necessary action.

Authority: Securing the data for strategic planning and implementation in deriving the best decision and action plans. Securing the sources of the data and eliminating the misuse of the information and data.

Then how are we presenting the data to Higher Level Management, is the data filtered during the process of presentation to save the time in the decision making process. What is the process and rules followed to filter the data? Who decided the limits of the data filtration?

Different Leadership Styles will have different filtration method of data management and for the final presentation. Like a follower of Autocratic Management Leadership will focus more on control and centralization of the decision process. Therefore, he will focus more on collection of data which will guide for taking decision making focused on controlling.

Whereas, who follows Participative Management Leadership he will focus more on participation and contribution by lower levels. Hence he will look the data for creative and decentralized decision making.

However, when both the data will be produced to the Higher Level Authority, it will be always contradictory and will place in a state of confusion to complete a decision making process. It is well-known that if we compare the information availability with an iceberg situation, then only 20% information are available with the Higher and Middle Level Management as there were lots of filtration done before the data have reached them.

Therefore is the Higher Level Authority responsible in making the decision or all levels are involved in a decision making process? When all levels are involved in the decision making process, then why most us neglects the lower level information or neglects to come down and speak with them and understand the ideas and views before taking any strategic or major decisions?

The Decision are mostly influenced by the data or information analyzer, but still we do have to value the time concerned for decision making and take the best decision in due course. Therefore, a review of decision and strategic ideas needs to be shared before taking the decisions. The Decision making Authority has to open up their ideas and needs of everyone before the decisions are taken and a review and impact checked to be done from the ground level. Whenever the decision and strategy have been taken only based on the information gathered from the middle level management the strategies have flailed and the blame goes on the implementations and discipline.

Then where we are standing, to bend the data received or give the accurate data when we can assume that the data will be used for a specified kind of strategy or using the power and authority to corrupt the strategy for personal or a group of persons benefits.
