Amazon 1 click check out is set to expire on 12 September 2017. Why? Because it was filed in September 12, 1997 and the patent term in the United States is 20 years.

1-Click, also called one-click, one-click buying or 1 click ordering, as Amazon explains, places your order automatically and lets you skip the shopping cart. When you place your first order and enter a payment method and shipping address, 1-Click ordering is automatically enabled. When you click Buy now with 1-Click on any product page, your order will be automatically charged to the payment method and shipped to the address associated with your 1-Click settings.

Amazon filed the 1-click patent in 1997 and it was granted in 1999. They also own the ‘1-click’ trademark. Patent US 5960411 protects the ‘Method and system for placing a purchase order via a communications network’. US and Europe have very different patent law. They tried for a few years (started in 2001 and last try was in 2011) but Amazon’s patent was never granted in Europe so European companies have been able to have one click checkout flows while American ones don’t, at least not without a license from Amazon. Apple has a license from Amazon and pays an undisclosed amount of money on license fees to use a version of this technology.

One click payment facilitates repeated purchases, increases impulse buying, it’s a very important part of the shopping experience and as such crucial for online conversion rate.

Google is already working on a one-click payments system for its Chrome browser, and other browser companies are expected to do the same. — Business Insider
