New York, Startup Weekend and Dribbble

Talk to design

These are the weeks of Sunday, July 30 through Sunday, August 19.

I have to say I'm not an artist, I'm a designer that needs to be treated as a designer.

MOMA

I went to New York, I went to MOMA. It was astonishing, it felt like that place loved me and care for me, it was like we connect on a Sunday morning with a beautiful breakfast at a lake house. The Bodys Isek Kingelez: City Dreams and Toward a Concrete Utopia: Architecture in Yugoslavia, 1948–1980 exhibitions are just excellent. For me architecture is the only profession that the result can be art that works for the rest of us.

Toward a Concrete Utopia: Architecture in Yugoslavia, 1948–1980, all the rough edges and the gray color that is shown in the photography exhibition are constantly reminding me how political ideas can be transformed into something material. It portraits a country phase and the feelings of its people.

The Bodys Isek Kingelez exhibitions is a fun way of looking at cities, at the artist everyday life and at what we think cities are made off.

Dribbble

I remember the first time someone talks to me about DeviantArt, scrolling through all that information it was just a lot and it was intimidating, the 20 year old that was still in college decided that those platforms weren’t important. Seven years later I’m creating a Dribbble account.

Is really scary to expose ourselves to platforms, but I think it teaches us one important thing, the way we handle criticism. Of course not always we will find someone that knows how to criticize our work, getting feedback is really hard and sometimes in this platform the people that you want them to see your work, is not watching.

To solve part of those problems I mentioned before I come out with a methodology to post on Dribbble and I think is working quite nice.

The first thing I did was find one of those challenges lists, the one I picked was collectui. After that, I search a list of industries, and I really like the one in the United States department of labor.

With this two list, I only have to mix one item from the challenge list and one from the industries. I really like this method because I can have a better idea of what I want.

Also, I try to make a really reliable description on Dribbble. This is an example of my most view shot

Onboarding

The other thing I do is nice tags that work with my design. Try to keep in mind what people from the industry will search and adding it.

The file is free and open to everyone

Startup Weekend

So I went to my first startup weekend in the United States! I think is one of the best experience a professional can have. Not only it will set your brain to the limit, is an unusual place to network and learning new skills.

The project I work at was Vesume, the idea was from a New Yorker, Tyler Simpson, that travel to Boston to do this. Her leadership was amazing and I really wish she could continue with this idea. I proudly did part of moqups and the presentation but also I gave ideas on the business plan, strategies and the concept itself.

I really enjoy the team

What I love about this things is that they remind you how much you can do in a weekend with the right attitude and free food.

The staff from Startup weekend Boston was so organized, had the best vibe and use their kindness to the fullest. Also, the food was really good.

Unfortunately, we didn’t win but I think all I learn about recruitment and resume and statistics about the subject makes me feel like a winner.

Mr. Bags

So in one of those moments where you are scrolling youtube and you find this video about When Givenchy Needs To Sell A Handbag In China, They Call Mr. Bags (HBO)

The whole industry of luxury bags is something that just amazes me so much and is not about the price tag.

The beauty in this item, the history behind it and the cultural ecosystem is something to see as designers. These bags represent a moment in design that is modern and trending. I call them, “The modern moving art”.

Mr. Bags is a Chinese luxury curator that have the eye, the experience, and the esthetics to run a business as it complements the newly Asian market.

The summer is ending and I feel I’m learning a lot from this events, from these people I’m meeting and of course from all the reading I’m doing.
