While the benefits of condo living have grown among homebuyers over years — urban location, building amenities, and affordability — the reality of actually living in a box has not.

Condos can feel claustrophobic, sterile, and devoid of personality. But there are simple changes that can be made, without breaking the bank, that will breathe some life back into the space.

Update the Lighting

While adding pot lights to your space would be ideal, this can be very costly. And depending on the condo rules, you could be restricted. Instead, update the existing light fixtures and add layers with ambiance lighting. But make sure to pick pieces that complement each other, as your condo is likely open concept. You want the space to feel cohesive and have the same design aesthetic throughout.

Update all the door knobs, cabinet pulls, and faucets throughout the space. You’d be surprised at how big of an impact this small change has. Again, make sure to choose something that speaks to overall the design.

Storage

Condos lack storage, so every inch of any storage space has to be extremely functional. Install a closet system in any bedroom closet to maximize the space. And don’t overlook drawers and kitchen cabinets. Add attractive dividers and bins to keep everything in its place.

Kitchen and Bathroom

While this change isn’t as simple as the previous 3, it does add the most value. Add a tile or stone backsplash. Replace laminate counters with a manmade stone option. You can save money by looking for end cuts given that condo kitchens or bathrooms do not have expansive counters.

Flooring

Again, not as easy as some of the other changes, but if you have an older condo with wall-to-wall carpeting, it’s definitely time to replace it. While hardwood is a good option, it can be very costly. Engineered hardwood, laminate, and even luxury vinyl look identical to the real stuff at a fraction of the price.

Outfit the space with furniture that is proportionate to the space. Large pieces will make the space feel smaller and darker. And add some personality through rugs, pillows, and artwork.

By making these simple but effective changes, you not only have a beautifully curated space that is unique to you, but you‘ve also added value to your investment.

Now doesn’t that sound nice?!
