Words That Matter
Today was a day when I was reminded just how much words matter. Not only in the ones we chose to use, but also the one we open ourselves up to hear. Ones I spoke today were, “It may be a solo journey, but you are never alone.” I say this from experience. Having learned that even though you set out on your own path, there are others who have walked a similar path. I realized that I needed to be able to reach out to seek advice. I was too much a loner and tried to do everything myself. It took me longer and caused too much frustration. Almost to the point of giving up and going back to the way society was telling me I should be living.
What I finally recognized was that even though nobody was on my path, I could learn from those who had experienced a similar journey. I could ask for help and be open to those who wanted to become part of my story.
Recently I was asked if I had read Adam Grant’s Give and Take. That question brought me back a couple years. It was right after the book came out. I was telling friends about my story and how I felt it was my purpose in life to help others via my gift of giving to create a greater impact. I told this to 3 people in the span of two days. Each one asked me if I had read Adam Grant’s book. I ordered it and have ordered well over 50 copies as gifts since then.
If I hadn’t been open to listen to other’s words, Adam’s book may not have had the impact on me that it has. You reading this today is a testament to that.
