Born in Turkey to a strictly secularist family, I attended strictly secularist schools and lived in a strictly secularist social circle. I believed this was how people in Europe and America lived as well. I often complained about Turkish conservatives and reactionaries, thinking I'd have been better off if I had been born in Europe or the US.

However, when I read stories like this, I realize how fortunate I have been all along.
