I’m A Disabled Woman Who’s NOT Celebrating Meryl Streep’s Golden Globes Speech
Emily Ladau

Great article Emily. Thank you for pointing out that people with disabilities aren’t always victims that need to be protected from consequences of participating in society. Integration requires respect of abilities instead of a focus on the disability.

I, too, am offended by Trump’s mocking of Mr. Kovaleski and consider his act of doing so a big flaw in his character. However, I have more disdain that with the stroke of a brush society reduces the character of Mr. Kovaleski - a successful, established reporter, as someone to be defenseless and pitiable as the target of Trump’s attacks.

While Trump has been equally offensive in his barrage of of insults against genders, races, ideologies or cultures; these targets aren’t stigmatized with being defenseless. Until this attitude changes, people with disabilities will need to continue to prove their skill and intelligence over and over again before ever being fully included in work and equal participation in society.
