I am excited you have joined me for coffee today. It is Father’s day in the US and my birthday. I think we will have some birthday cupcakes this morning to celebrate but no singing.
I am having a Butter Brew coffee with a shot of espresso for the occasion. What would you like today?
If we were having coffee, I would tell you this week has been full of ups and downs. I was able to write every day and am making my way through my writing course. I am enjoying the writing and the readings. The exercises are getting more in-depth now which I am enjoying. I also watched a 10 min video in my course that has changed my writing life forever! I was finally able to wrap my head around a few concepts that were getting in the way of making my scenes more powerful. I am excited to see how this manifests in the day’s writings to come.
If we were having coffee I would tell you I have had a lot more writing conversations and I have been enjoying them as well. I seem to be insatiable for writing talk all around!
If we were having coffee, I would tell you I had a work phone call this week that came as a complete surprise. All I can say right now is my job is changing. I am still dealing with the shock and the ripple effect of this news. Then a meeting that was rescheduled was canceled on me which I was geared up about. These two are connected and it is frustrating. I am also finding out bits and pieces from other people which is also a bit maddening. I focus on what I can control and not worry about it right now.
If we were having coffee, I would tell you I keep checking out books at the library but have made little time to read. I took a couple of books outside and read a few pages in between writing pages but didn’t get very far. My focus has not been on the printed word for anything longer than short story length. I have books that I own I keep flipping through but the pile is getting bigger next to the bed. It is going to topple over soon.
If we were having coffee I would ask you what has been inspiring to you this week?
I listened to a couple of podcasts again which I found inspiring a while ago. Sarah Selecky’s interviews on the Secret Library Podcast and Caroline Donahue’s interview on the Writers Well podcast.
If we were having coffee I would tell you I ran several times this week. It has felt good to get back to it but I am now a runner with a lowercase “r” not an uppercase “R”. I think back to the races and the paces I used to run and sometimes it makes me a little sad compared to how I run now. I know how to train to get faster but I have no desire to dedicate the time to such an endeavor. I want to stay fit and healthy and have my clothes fit — not win races anymore. I do miss my speed.
Do you need a refill on your coffee? I am going to get another Butter Brew — birthday calories don’t count.
If we were having coffee I would tell you I wrote every day. I have been mostly free writing but also some character work which I enjoyed quite a lot. I noticed there is a longer story developing there too. Some of the free writing in the days that followed were different elements of a story surrounding this new creation. There was a word couplet exercise about connection I enjoyed as well. It is a bit strange but wonderful.
If we were having coffee I would tell you I tried a new recipe inspired by Half Baked Harvest called: Corn, Tomato, and Avocado Pasta Salad. I added garlic salt, shaved parmesan, a little Italian dressing, and cucumber. Everyone loves it! It makes a nice side dish and if you added chicken or shrimp it could be a nice summer main course.
Thank you so much for joining me for coffee! I always enjoy our visits and today was no different. Let’s have coffee again soon!
