What are some tips for writing a novel?

A question asked of me on Quora.com. — First off, don’t try to write the novel from the idea. Just write down the idea. Write down notes on the characters. Write down notes on the plot points. Write down notes on the plot twists and the conflicts. Use these notes like sticky notes, and move them around on…

What is the best way to write an imaginative response?

A question asked of me on Quora.com. — Know your audience. Know what pop culture they live in. For example, today’s high school jocks wouldn’t really be likely to quote from “Monty Python and the Holy Grail”, though their parents very well might. Find connections between the question you’re answering and your audience’s current pop culture. Don’t be…

What makes a great story for a novel?

A question asked of me on Quora.com. — Conflict! Conflict is a key element to writing a great novel. Mind you, “conflict” does not necessarily mean all-out war. Rather, you get conflict any time your character wants something and can’t have it. You can think of it this way: Goal+ Obstacle = Conflict. What does your character want to…

Can blind people spin their own yarn?

A question asked of me on Quora.com. — Oh yes! Blind people can certainly spin their own yarn. Spinning yarn is a very tactile craft, with only small amounts of visual work involved, and that mostly in color dying and blending. You work more by feel than by sight. Of course, you can spin nearly any kind of…

How do I figure out what I want to write about?

A question asked of me on Quora.com. — Try making a list. List Ten Great Things that happened to you. List Ten Awful Things that happened to you. Can you expand on any of these things? Perhaps you could just write about the wallpaper you’re looking at, and see where that goes. Write about how you got your…

What happens if you stop using shampoo on your hair for a year?

A question asked of me on Quora.com — I have been almost completely soap/detergent/cleanser/shampoo-free for my clothes and my hair and skin for well over a year. There have been times when I have used soap or shampoo, but mostly during pool season, because public pool scum really needs soap to get rid of it. However, in my…

Post-Surgery Blues

The aches and pains continue… — I lost my dialysis graft in my upper left arm, after nearly six years of use. It clogged up on my birthday, at the end of January, and needed to be cleared out at the vascular access clinic. The next week, it clogged up again, and needed to be cleared…

How can I prevent others from stealing my story ideas in a writing group or class?

A question asked of me on Quora.com. — The fact is, you cannot lay claim to any “story idea”. I use the quotes, because a story idea is nothing more than the merest seed, the set-up, the situation alone. A story idea is not a plot, it is not a synopsis or an outline. It could be a…

How do I read faster and comprehend better at the same time?

A question asked of me on Quora.com. To learn to read faster, take a speed-reading course. To retain more of what you read, read slower and more deliberately, with purpose, and write notes on paper of what you have read. It helps sometimes to actually read out loud, since hearing information while seeing the same information increases the brain’s engagement with that information. And if you read something out loud and then write it down yourself, you’ve added another layer of cognitive engagement, and you’ll remember that much more.
