Well written. I think democracies are strictly superior to dictatorships, however enlightened for precisely the reason that you’ve laid out. It only takes one civil war to destroy everything and reset progress to zero, along with wrecking a region’s cultural and social infrastructure. The bloodless revolution that democracies allow represent an enormous social and political advantage. The United States could still, theoretically clean house with nothing more than votes. But it’s getting more and more theoretical at this point.
