Tanner Iskra grew raised in Aberdeen, Grays Harbor County, in the state of Washington. Here in the county of Grays Harbor, he attended secondary school.

The soldier and cinematographer graduated from Arizona State University's Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication. The school is named after legendary journalist Walter Cronkite. Iskra received his bachelor's degree from the Cronkite School at Arizona State University.

He has also attended Syracuse University's S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications. He earned his military motion media certification at Syracuse University's communications and journalism department. The university, often known as Newhouse School, is renowned for its broadcast journalism programs.

The Defense Information School has also qualified Iskra in video production and documentation, visual information management, and intermediate videography. The Defense Information School satisfies the Department of Defense's internal demand for broadcasters and journalists with professional training.
