Questions I always ask in an Interview

Disclaimer: These are questions I ask as an Interviewee, NOT as an interviewer.

I don’t typically ask ALL of these questions in a single interview. More often than not, the interviewers will have answered a couple of these when they describe the role to you.

It may also be beneficial to ask the same question to multiple people.

With that said, let’s get started!

Engineering

  • Could you describe your deployment process? How do you find bugs in your team’s code?
  • Do you do code reviews?
  • What is your current stack? What are some things you are looking to possibly implement in the future?
  • What version control system do you use?
  • How do you approach technical debt?

Management

  • How is performance evaluated
  • What is the management structure like? Who would I report to?
  • How is work assigned?
  • How often do developers get to speak to non-developers (such as clients)?
  • What would my typical day-to-day look like? What would be my responsibilities?
  • What is the long term trajectory for this role? Will the responsibilities change? What sort of room is there to move up? (You should take this answer with a grain of salt. Companies and their needs of can change. You should view this as the intention of the role)
  • How often do you have meetings? Are there any scheduled / standing meetings?

Culture

  • What are some things that you / your team have done recently that you are really proud of? (This can give you an idea of what they value)
  • How does Internal communication work?
  • Would I be on call? How often?
  • Is remote work a part of your culture?
  • What is the on boarding process like?
  • How do you determine if someone is a good / poor fit for your company?
  • What is YOUR favorite part about this job?
  • Do you have a particular part of the year where things get busier than normal?
  • How can I make myself more valuable to you / the team?

Misc.

  • What would you consider the most challenging aspect of this position?
  • Can you tell me about how the interview process is structured? How many interviews are there?
  • Do you have any concerns about my qualifications. (This can put you in a vulnerable spot, but it will give you a chance to elaborate on XXX and may help put the interviewer at ease.)
  • Is there anything you wish you had known before starting here?
