Before I provide the steps to get into the MS-HCI program at SJSU, let me give you some background about my university application experience. If you only want to know the steps, feel free to skip ahead directly to the end of the page.

In 2019, after graduating, I searched for universities with UX Design courses. It was difficult to find courses specifically focused on “User Experience Design”. Some universities offered courses in Human Computer Interaction, like DePaul Chicago, Michigan Dearborn, and Northeastern Boston. However, these courses required subjects like DBMS and computer science, and some were more focused on user research.

I applied to Parsons School of Design in New York, but my computer science background worked against me since I was not accepted into any programs. Design schools usually require a bachelor’s degree in fine arts or design for admission into a master’s program.

Back then,I wasn’t aware that SJSU had a course on UX design called Human Factors/Ergonomics, which is why I didn’t apply then.

In 2020, I received admission offers from a few universities and decided to attend one for my master’s program. However, I wasn’t completely satisfied with my choice. When Covid-19 hit later that year, I deferred my admission to the following fall. This gave me a year to reconsider my university selection and learn more about the courses offered at SJSU. While exploring the available courses, I discovered more about Human Factors/Ergonomics. After reviewing the coursework and available electives, I was thrilled about the program. I was aware that although SJSU did not have a ranking, it was still a well-known university and offered courses that would help me gain a deeper understanding of design and research concepts.

In 2021, the HFE course heavily focused on research and usability testing, but there were also several design-related electives offered. Ultimately, the course was the deciding factor for me in choosing SJSU, and I began to build up my profile before applying to the master’s program.

Steps to apply for MS — HFE at SJSU:

  • First, to apply for the MS-HFE program at SJSU, you do not need to take the GRE exam. Instead, they require your TOEFL or IELTS score, WES mark sheet evaluation (if your bachelor’s degree is not from the USA), statement of purpose, letters of recommendation, resume, and design portfolio (as this is a design program).
  • Second, SJSU has also created a course with HCI concentration that focuses more on design rather than ergonomics or research. You can find more information about this course here.
  • The application process is straightforward. You will need to provide bank documents to show your current assets and liquid cash amount, which should be sufficient to cover the two-year course fees and living expenses.
  • In addition to submitting the documents online, you will also need to send a physical packet to the university via mail before the deadline.

And that’s it, after this you will just have to wait for the decision letter!
