Art is the expression of the soul. Words are for the conscious mind but, art is the subconscious creation of the heart. The National Gallery of Modern Art is a venue where fresh and old minds meet to set out their version of expressions. The NGMA showcases art pieces from creators from around the world. Yet, for the record, half of the museum’s collection is dominated by paintings of Rabindranath Tagore and Amrita Sher Gil. The gallery has preserved modern art from 1850 onwards. The establishment of NGMA was sighted towards the promotion of Modern art, which indirectly supported the feeling of patriotism in Indians during the revolutionary era. NGMA, with its 12,000 sq.m exhibition area, lists itself in the world’s largest modern art museums. Many paintings of Sher Gil depict the social and political conditions of the timeline 1913–1941. Works of Nicholas Roerich, a Russian artist, contains illustrations of Himalayan mountains that signify the loftiness of spirit and sense of mission that led Roerich to attempt the tasks he set for himself. The NGMA’s sculpture collection is amongst the richest in the country. The Gallery is further enhancing the collection with the acquisition of contemporary works that blur the boundaries between sculpture and installation. The astounding sculptures of artists like, Chintamoni Kar, Mrinalini Mukherjee, and Dhanraj Bhagat will dig the mountain of your thoughts. The NGMA organizes numerous exhibitions throughout the year, which now also includes virtual galleries and virtual exhibitions. Due to the digitalization of all processes, it is easier for artists and enthusiasts to connect better with such influential platforms. Various online workshops have also taken place this year and So’Ham, India’s first cultural media platform originated here this year. The National Gallery of Modern Art is a classic dream for every art lover and antiquarian. It is a journey you would never want to miss.
