Day 3

New York—Basel—New York

I wake up before my alarm goes off. It is 7.45 am. The shower is warm. Feels good. I pack my bags and make chai tea in a coffee machine. Nobody awake but me. Moby is playing in my iPad. I cherish these mornings. I make pancakes and have breakfast with the others. Last day in this house. I wait for the group to get ready. We take a bus to the ferry. In the waiting hall I take a couple photos with my Mamiya. I use an Ilford black and white film with a speed of 400 iso. I read while the ferry takes me to Manhattan. Then the L train to Jefferson Street. I see a guy with a Pebble smart watch. In the same train I see the golden iPhone 5s for the first time. The vinegar bottle in our grocery’s bag leaks. There are vinegar markings everywhere it is put down. I leave my bag in the new apartment and go for lunch. We go to a small salad bar. I order south western tomato soup and drink water. After lunch I walk around the block. I take photographs of a friend walking the streets of Brooklyn bare foot. It is for a university project about dirt. We improvise a very short reading of Murakamis 1Q84 on a street corner. Some new people of our university group arrive from the airport. I sit on a small wooden chair in a tiny coffee place. I drink Jasmine tea. We met by accident. I wish I had brought my Mamiya. This place has a really nice ceiling. The wind outside is getting colder. Back in the apartment I put on Moby’s album Innocents. Later M83. I have a look at the other apartment. It is just a few hundred meters down the street. On my way back I buy a six pack of Samule Adams Winter Ale and a pack of instant noodles. I share the beer and eat my noodles. Then I help inflating the air mattress. I sleep on the couch though. We are too many for the two apartments.
