If the nearest star to us exploded or just went out, it would be almost 4¼ years before we knew. With other stars it could be a thousand years or fifty thousand years or more.

I’m still not sure if this is actually true. Or in what sense it is. Because causality happens at the speed of light, or its the same thing really, it doesn’t actually happen - to us - until we see it.
