10 Questions with Interior Designer Sean Anderson

Interior Designer | Sean Anderson

“His work reflects a perfect blend of fresh and functional, classic and contemporary, a just‐right mix of old and new that is forever timeless. His obsession over the smallest details results in a finished product that is truly flawless.”

This quote sums up Sean to us. We first saw Sean’s brilliance when he transformed this 1960’s home. We thought that his work here was truly inspirational and his approach was very fresh. Then low and behold last month Architectural Digest (the mother ship) featured his transformation of the Memphis colonial.

Truth is Sean’s star is on the rise and we are glad to get a glimmer before the AD100 calls his name. We also would love to see him blogging more because this interview was amazing.

Please sit back and enjoy a bit of Memphis with a modern twist!

What manufacturer would you love to team up with and why?

Lighting has always been one of the most integral parts of my design process. For me, nothing sets the tone for a space better than a standout fixture. To work with Urban Electric or Visual Comfort (two of my personal favorites) would be a dream!

Who is the designer that you admire and how have they influenced your design work?

Darryl Carter has had a profound influence on me and the way I approach design. His love of a neutral palette, ability to mix objects of different styles and eras, and incorporation of various antiques and vintage pieces into his spaces really speak to the core of who I am as a designer. Another is Jeffrey Alan Marks, his ability to layer a space the way he does is pure genius!

What is a design tip you live by?

Don’t rush the process! Not every client has an unlimited budget and I find it incredibly important to do what you can, when you can. It’s a lesson I repeatedly stress to clients with budget constraints and it certainly beats looking back six months down the road and being filled with regret because things weren’t done correctly the first time around.

What makes you get out of bed in the morning?

Ya know, the older I get, the more I’m realizing I love waking up to the unknown of each day. I find myself relishing each new lesson learned and can honestly say that being able to pursue a career doing something I love has greatly influenced that.

What is your favorite vacation spot and can you recommend a place to visit or stay there?

Paris is at the top of the list. It’s one of those cities that’s just mesmerizing, rich in beauty and history. A favorite thing to do there is to pick an area and just go get lost in it for the day, it creates such an unique experience and has left me with some of my favorite travel memories.

I also love the beach and Alys/ Rosemary Beach in Florida has become a recurring destination. It’s close enough for a nice little road trip and is a great spot to catch up and spend quality time with my family.

What happens in your initial meeting with a client?

For me, that first meeting is all about getting to know the client. My main objective going in is to fully understand the scope of work at hand, to garner a sense of the clients style, and to determine whether the client and I are a good match and that I can in turn help them achieve their goals for the project.

How do you communicate your vision to the client?

My process is very much a collaboration with the client, I want to ensure them that their voice is heard and ideas are implemented if possible. Seeing that most people respond visually, pulling imagery very much helps in relaying my ideas. I also urge the client to do the same if it helps them express their thoughts and ideas.

Describe what you like best about your home.

I love that my home is truly a collected one, a home filled with objects that each tell a story or remind me of a specific time and place. I think that’s important for people to keep in mind when purchasing items for their own homes too, buy things that speak to you and you’ll never tire of them. Also, I recently moved just outside the city on a little bit of acreage and have never been happier, being away from the hustle and bustle of city life and surrounded by nature has had quite the calming effect on me. I’m loving every minute of it!

How would you describe your sense of style?

Ever evolving … I try to never repeat myself and am constantly experimenting and challenging myself to try something new. I truly feel that no two spaces should be alike. I am drawn to traditional elements but with a twist, adding something unexpected or unique that makes a space memorable. I’m also a lover of incorporating various textures in a space, I feel it helps tell the story and convey a mood.
