Why Wallpaper Works for Hospitality Design
If the walls could talk what would they say?
I hope you like the dramatic intro because it is all about the walls…In your home, hotel, restaurant and the list goes on and on. During the 50’s the United States fell in love with wallpaper and then in the 70’s when they attempted to take it off, they quickly fell out of love with it. Truth be told, when you think of wallpaper you think hassle and well…… more hassle. In addition, the mess of cleaning up if you ever decide to go with another pattern is too much to consider. In the United States, paint is king and queen and companies like Sherman Williams have been reigning supreme for a long time. Paint is not difficult to use, easy to buy and comes in so many pretty colors so why not just go with the flow? I understand it and I too for a long time have drunk the Kool-Aid and just gone with the flow. Until, I realized that my favorite luxury hotels and restaurants all use some of the most extravagant wallpaper, or should I say wall coverings, to get that one-of-a-kind look. In fact, I just do not think you can get that 5 star luxury without top shelf wall coverings. Prove me wrong America…Prove me wrong.
In hospitality design, if you are opening a new 5 star hotel or restaurant you go with wall covering. Unless, of course, you are a top chef and then people will come even if you have a food truck. But for the most part, you go with high end wall coverings so people will get that one-of-a-kind experience at your restaurant.
Now if you hop across the pond to Europe you will see less paint and a whole lot of wall covering in people’s houses. Most of Europe has embraced the fact that with modern wall coverings come new ways to install these gorgeous pieces of art. Less hassle, less fuss and a whole lot of cool wall coverings. With the way technology has evolved, wall coverings are just incredible. One of my favorite wall covering companies is Elitis in France. They are the kings of the industry and have been for a long time. Another company I also think is at the top of the heap is Kravet, which collaborates with some stellar designers to create some of the most fantastic designs. Just ask Barbara Barry, Ralph Lauren Home and Kate Spade who all have collections with Kravet. Okay enough talking, let’s get on to those delicious visuals.
