KTTV Fox 11

The Newsroom of my choice this semester is KTTV Fox 11 in Los Angeles. This is a Fox owned and operated television station. KTTV currently broadcasts 49 hours of local newscasts per week. Roughly, 9 hours on weekdays, and 2 hours each on Saturdays and Sundays. This makes KTTV the second largest local news output station in the Los Angeles area, being behind only the CW affiliate KTLA who have roughly 78 and half hours of weekly newscasts.

After researching this station a bit, I have come to find out that they are actually held in high regard, within the Los Angeles area. By looking at their website and online, I found most of the reviews for this news station are positive. I found their website in particular, had good information on Sports and ‘breaking news’ stories.

When I begin following this station closely, I’m looking to learn a couple of things: 1. How this newsroom deals with ‘breaking news’ 2. How they balance their entertainment news, when being located in what many consider an entertainment capital.

Some questions I have for this newsroom, that I hope can be answered for me this semester is: What do your internships look like, and what do they entail if you are a student journalist? Also: How do you as a news station, compete with rival news station KTLA?

I think Fox 11 approaches social media pretty well. One social media they are clearly lacking on though, is Instagram. They could post more frequently on this outlet. However, I think their Facebook page is an excellent use of social media. The page is clearly organized, and I feel I can find information pretty easily. To compare further, I also believe their Twitter account could use some work. I feel they rely on Twitter too much for their ‘breaking news’ stories. I often see some of the comedians I follow on Twitter, making fun of Fox 11 headlines on Twitter. I just feel they could sound a little less extreme, in some of the Twitter headlines I’ve seen. Overall, I think their social media outlets do sound like a real human, is behind on their posts.

To sum up in one sentence why I want to research Fox 11 personally: I am interested in living in Los Angeles one day. I hope I can learn more about what their station stands for as a whole, and maybe I can make a connection with someone at the station as well. I look forward to following them a bit more closely, these next weeks.
