How will you make a change?
Social identity is how we identify our self and others based on common characteristics such as race, vocation, place of origin etc. People use social identity in basic communication to create relationships based off shared characteristics. Gender, race, religion and ethnicity are all categories of identity based on moral or political history, which is basically things we’ve been taught. Understanding the conceptual construct of these categorizations help us understand our history. Since the idea of social identity is so broad, the idea behind diversity should be as well. Although the definition of diversity is having or being composed of different elements, a lot of people limit the term to simply define diversity in terms of race or gender. Berliner and Hull say that diversity promotes racism, but that idea makes is harder for people to understand what diversity is. When people hear the word diversity, they should think of what makes an individual unique. People should not instantly think of race or something along those lines but think about the creativity of the persons mind or focus on learning more about where the person is from.
The claim of color blindness is old and tired and, in my opinion, if you claim to be “color blind” you are a part of the problem. Race unfortunately will always be a part of our society and although it is projected that minorities will compose over 54% of the U.S. population by 2050 and become the majority, non-Hispanic single race whites will still be a large part of everyday life. Changing the thinking process (of some but definitely not all) white Americans when it comes to understanding diversity is what will help create a change in society. Being color blind means you do not see the reason behind whatever the issue is and without that, there will never be a change.
