How I Write with Generative AI
In the realm of modern content creation, the integration of Generative AI into my writing process has been nothing short of transformative. As someone who values the responsible use of technology to convey thoughts and experiences succinctly, I’ve found that AI tools like ChatGPT significantly enhance my writing efficiency and quality.
Pre-AI Writing Approach
Prior to embracing AI, my articles on platforms like Medium were crafted solely based on my personal insights and research. ChatGPT’s analysis of my writing style highlighted its nature as informative and analytical, blending a professional yet conversational tone. My style was educational with practical insights and consistently engaged and provoked thought among readers.
Integrating Generative AI into My Writing
The shift to incorporating AI began with structuring my stories into bullet points, outlining key information and the general flow. This preparation serves as a blueprint for the AI, ensuring that the resulting content aligns with my intentions.
The AI-Powered Writing Process
I engage with ChatGPT by providing it with my bullet points, coupled with specific instructions to mirror my writing style. For instance, I prompt:
Write an article about the following topic:
⁃ [Insert bullet point list]
Use an Informative and Analytical, Professional yet conversational tone
and a style that is Educational with Practical Insights as well as
Engaging and Thought-Provoking; use uk English spellings.
Having spent my younger years in Canada, I have a penchant for the British English spellings, hence my emphasis on UK English spellings, including the charming ‘u’ in words like ‘colour’.
## Edit — After Learning some Prompt Engineering
I while used the above approach for a while, I did some research into better ways of using ChatGPT. Turns out that there’s a whole lot more than can be done:
- Start a chain of thought and ask what ChatGPT needs in order to write a blog post for medium based on the initial bullet list
- Answer it’s questions and it will make a better post
But you can take this a step further by getting ChatGPT to write you a better prompt to write a better blog post. That’s my main methodology now. It’s based on the successful COSTAR framework, seriously it’s pretty cool. It gives ChatGPT enough structure to be able to follow fine-tuned instructions.
Proofreading and Iteration
Once ChatGPT generates a draft, I meticulously proofread it. This step is crucial for refining the bullet points with additional information or corrections. The process may repeat several times until the final product resonates with my ideas and preferred style.
Responsible AI Usage Notation
After finalizing the article, I add a note at the bottom, informing readers about the use of AI in the article’s creation. I believe in transparency regarding how information is produced, ensuring readers are aware of the technology’s role in content generation.
Visual Complement with MidJourney
To further enhance my articles, I use MidJourney to create images that complement the text. I adhere to a consistent palette and style, usually opting for minimalism and flat design with a specific color scheme. This consistency in visual elements supports the serious, corporate, formal, professional, yet friendly tone of the articles.
Conclusion: AI as a Collaborative Tool
Integrating Generative AI into my writing process has not only streamlined content creation but also enriched the depth and quality of my work. It’s a collaboration where technology meets human creativity, resulting in content that is both informative and engaging, crafted to spark thought and convey knowledge. This approach exemplifies the harmonious potential of human-AI collaboration in the ever-evolving landscape of content creation.
