Educators Applaud Governor Whitmer’s Call-To-Action on K-12 Funding
NEWS RELEASE: Educators responded to Governor Gretchen Whitmer’s State of the State speech tonight by applauding her call to make new investments in K-12 school funding and pledging to support efforts to implement the Governor’s vision for a well-funded & fair school-aid budget.
“Educators have been saying for years that we need to make a bold, new investment in public schools throughout Michigan and tonight we heard a Governor outline her priority to do just that,” said Eve Kaltz, TCA Secretary/Treasurer and Superintendent of Centerline Schools. “I’m excited for our students to have a Governor that believes in their future and understands what they need to succeed.”
The Tri-County Alliance for Public Education (TCA) led the effort to establish the School Finance Research Collaborative (SFRC), a nonpartisan group of education, business and government leaders that released a report last year showing showing the extent of the funding crisis in Michigan’s public schools. TCA officials have encouraged Governor Whitmer to begin adopting the recommendations of the SFRC as part of her 2019–2020 school aid budget.
“To have a Governor that has educators excited about the state’s upcoming budgeting process instead of dreading it is certainly a welcome change of pace,” added George Heitsch, TCA President and Superintendent of Farmington Schools. “This is the leadership we’ve been waiting for from Lansing.”
