Confession: I am obsessed with mushrooms

When I was a freshman in college, I felt like most 19-year olds probably do — I had no idea what I wanted to do in life. College seemed like the best way to hold myself accountable to the kind of structure that might get me somewhere. While my work seemed arbitrary and disconnected, years later, one constant has remained.

I am obsessed with mushrooms.

Okay, okay. I know what you’re thinking. Mushrooms?? Like, the kind that get you high?

Nooooooo … Like the actual, edible, delicious mushrooms.

Oh, so like, those white mushrooms they put on pizza?

Nah. Not those (although I don’t discriminate against them). I’m talking about the 10,000+ edible mushrooms (and counting!) that exist in the world, like maitake, truffles and Lion’s mane mushrooms.

Oh my gosh. You’re such a nerd. What a random thing to like!!!

Totally. I know that. But I can’t help how fascinating they are. And I absolutely plan on showing you why.

For example, did you know that some mushrooms have been tested for curing cancer? Did you know that some may have the ability to eliminate oil spills? Did you know that the largest organism in the world is fungi?

Mushrooms not only survive — but thrive — after forest fires destroy everything else. They are miraculous little hidden gems that work behind the scenes to keep our natural world strong and healthy. Lucky for us, they’re super healthy and they taste awesome.

My goal is to show you how complex and amazing the world of fungi truly is, through science, nature, philosophy, and cooking, as well with my own personal experiences as I set out to try all the world’s edible mushrooms.
