Food traceability starts with the identification of the livestock.
Currently an identifying plastic tag containing a number, a barcode, a QR code, or RFID is attached to the animals. However, in large amounts applied tags are expensive to buy, human resource is needed to apply them, and sometimes special tools (RFID tag readers, writers) have to be purchased which can get damaged.
For the average farmer in the U.S. identifying cattle with tagging costs US$2–5, which is too expensive for smaller farmers.

Finding a non-invasive way to identify farm animals is something farmers have always wanted. Recently with cheap cameras providing good quality photos, and Artificial Intelligence algorithms becoming reliable and easily available the conditions are there to realize this dream.

Our Research and Development project aims to solve photographic face recognition for cattle. This is how we visualize the process working:

1. We prepare a facial image database of the cattle converted to a grayscale float matrix. This helps the algorihrm learn to detect patterns.
Such algorithms are just like chidren, they need a lot of practice to master a task.

2. A camera is set up in the cattle crush which is known to the cattle as being the place where examination, marking and veterinary treatment is given.

The cattle are led to the crush and are then viewable by the camera.

3. A low level flashlight catches the attention of the cattle. When the cattle look up a photo is taken.

4. The algorithm converts the image to a greyscale float matrix. The edges of the image are determined allowing patterns to be identified.

5. The resulting patterns are compared against the database of the animals in the farm / lot to find the matching identified animal.

If we can provide a reliable way to identify the animals without tagging them with physical identification tools it will open an extremely large new market for TE-FOOD.
