We’ve created a guide for the main professions in design for everyone who hasn’t yet decided on their career, but really wants to work with visual content.

Graphic Designer

The widest and most sought-after profession. Graphic designers work closely with the marketing department and create the brand’s image: they deal with both printed and digital materials. That is why such specialists should be proficient in a large number of graphic tools, be creative and understanding, and also be able to come up with both an amazing illustration for the most banal of news and official presentation for reports.

Another important skill of a graphic designer is stress tolerance and the ability to prioritize, as customers need their materials here and now.

Basic skills:

  • Raster and vector graphic editors: Adobe Illustrator, Adobe InDesign, Adobe Photoshop, SketchApp
  • Knowledge of typography, composition principles and color combinations
  • Understanding the principles of creating printed materials
  • The ability to draw by hand and on a tablet

Web Designer

Web designers are responsible for the brand’s visual representation online. These specialists develop the concept and design of landing pages and multipage sites and draw layouts for them. They also create single elements such as banners, icons, email newsletter, and other promotional materials.

Basic skills:

  • Raster and vector graphic editors: Adobe Illustrator, Adobe InDesign, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe XD, SketchApp
  • Knowledge of typography, composition principles and color combinations
  • Understanding the technical aspects of development: HTML5 and CSS3, JavaScript, knowledge of the main frameworks and CMS

UX ‑ designer (User experience designer)

The goal of the UX‑designer is to make user navigation and interaction with sites, applications, programs, and video games simple and user-friendly. They develop products from scratch and improve existing ones based on behavioral research and user needs.

Basic skills:

  • Knowledge of HTML5 and CSS3, JavaScript
  • Knowledge of software for digital products design: Adobe InDesign, Adobe Photoshop, Axure, SketchApp, InVision
  • Knowledge of internet marketing tools: iterations, conversions, sales funnels

Motion Designer

Such specialists work with video and animation and are irreplaceable on TV channels, in film studios and for video production, and in companies that actively broadcast channels on YouTube and Instagram. A motion designer should understand graphic design, screenwriting, and video production.

Basic skills:

  • Programs to work with graphics: Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Flash
  • Programs for editing and creating animations: Adobe Premiere, Adobe After Effects, Autodesk Combustion, Apple Motion
  • Tools for creating 3D graphics: Autodesk 3ds Max, Autodesk Maya, LightWave 3D, Cinema 4D

Interior designer

Interior designers are engaged in space planning and arrangement to increase its functionality, safety, and aesthetic appeal.

This profession involves the entire process of interior design: from space planning, lighting, ventilation systems, acoustics, and wall furnishing to furniture arrangement and textile design.

Basic skills:

  • Adobe Photoshop to create collages and Autodesk 3ds Max, Sketchup to present the final interior project to the client
  • Programs for working documentation: Revit or AutoCad or ArchiCad
  • Understanding of construction and finishing materials, knowledge of construction standards
