Nova Scotia opens Week 2 action with 7 paddling medals

Two paddlers won multiple medals as the team kicked off Week 2 action with seven medals, including three golds.

The team medalled in seven of eight races.

Ashley Card, Hammonds Plains, took home a gold in women’s K-1 500. She teamed up with Anna Negulic, Halifax, to get silver, as the pair were second in women’s K-2 1,000m.

Connor Fitzpatrick, Dartmouth, easily won gold in men’s C-1 500m. Fitzpatrick teamed up with Matthew Peachey, Lower Sackville, and the pair earned bronze in men’s C-2 1,000m, missing silver by 0.07 seconds.

Mark Marschalko, Dartmouth, and Jacob Steele, Halifax, won men’s K-2, 1,000m, a full one-second ahead of the silver finisher.

Zane Clarke, Halifax, took silver in men’s K-1 500m. Clarke will be Nova Scotia’s flagbearer at the closing ceremonies.

Nicole Jessop, Halifax, took bronze in a tight three-way race in women’s C-1 500m. She teamed up with Marlee MacIntosh, Halifax, to finish fourth in women’s C-2 1,000m.

In women’s volleyball, Nova Scotia beat Saskatchewan 3–0 with scores of 25–14, 25–18, and 25–22. In their late afternoon match, they played an exciting series of close games against Manitoba before falling 3–1. The teams were tied 1–1 (29–27, 18–25). Manitoba took the second game 25–21. Manitoba mostly controlled play in the final game, finishing 25–17. The game was shown on TSN.

The men lost 3–0 to Saskatchewan with scores of 25–22, 25–20 and 25–17.

In softball, the women were beat 13–1 by B.C. in their first game. Jazz Kelly, Prospect, went 1–for-2 and drove in Brooke Hawley, Port Hood, for Nova Scotia’s only run. Drake Doyle Dartmouth, took the loss while Jenna Leadbetter, Mineville, threw three innings of relief.

In the nightcap, Nova Scotia fell 8-1 to Alberta. Nikita Kenney, Sheet Harbour, went 3–for-3 with a double and Kelly, went 1–for-2 and drove in Alisha Bowes-Trinacty, Westphal. Kelyn Palmer, Thorburn, took the loss. She pitched five innings before Drew Doyle, Dartmouth, came in for one inning of relief.

In swimming, Madison Archer, Halifax, finished fifth in women’s 1,500m free.

Other final results include Hayden Bartoch, Dartmouth (13th, 800m free), Nick Bourbonniere, Dartmouth (15th, 800m free), Grace Earle, Halifax (13th, 1,500m free), Holly Doucette, Lower Sackville (14th, 200m (S1–5, S14)), women’s 4x200m free (7th), and men’s 4x200m free (6th).

In tennis, Nova Scotia met Quebec in the team quarterfinal play, falling 5-0.

Tomorrow’s look-ahead

Golf: Round 1 action begins at 7:30 a.m.

Soccer: Men play Saskatchewan at 4 p.m.

Softball: Women take on New Brunswick at 11 a.m. and Saskatchewan at 3 p.m.

Swimming: Prelims begin at 11:30 a.m. and continue throughout afternoon. Finals for Special Olympics events begin at noon and for other events starting at 7 p.m.

Tennis: Nova Scotia begins play at 2 p.m.

Volleyball: Women play P.E.I. at 4 p.m. Men take on P.E.I. at 9 a.m. and B.C. at 8 p.m.
