Worst of all is the fact that few people in the age of a TED talk will eagerly sit through a traditional lecture when there’s little at stake.

Not true. People never eagerly sat through lectures — they skipped them, gazed out of windows, passed messages, cribbed notes. On the other hand, people will sit through engaging and relevant lectures even in the age of the TED talks — just not everyone for everything.
