When Technology fails

Tesla’s autopilot is clearly causing some problems to its users. The technology is imperfect. Training of its drivers is deficient and non existent. The driving schools have yet to catch up with technology and so will not teach drivers the essential steps on how to drive an autopilot vehicle.

We can draw some similiarities with the deployment of electronic medical records (EMR). Firstly, the imperfections is a major distraction from the fundamental task of interacting with patients. Secondly, navigating through the myriad of functions and tasks in an EMR likely requires more training than previously thought.

Many assume that EMR is like Facebook or Instagram, with the later being very intuitive and enjoyable thus requiring almost no training to master its use. Unfortunately, EMR systems are usually cumbersome and full of technical procedures to navigate.

So this scenario with Tesla can teach us how rushing to implement a digital solution can potentially prove fatal for some.
