or decades, the word Extended Reality has been used. It originally surfaced in the 1960s, when Charles Wyckoff submitted a patent for his silver-halide “XR” film, which was designed to capture extraordinarily brilliant light events like nuclear explosions.

As device makers struggle to characterize the various display enhancements they’re working with, the word has recently gained popularity. Despite the fact that demand for extended reality has been steadily expanding for some time, the market experienced a major uptick in 2020 and 2021. The epidemic (COVID-19) sparked a surge in interest in virtual reality experiences for retail, work, and collaboration. Around 80% of executives now believe that XR is critical for bridging the “physical distance” between employees.

This article defines digital and extended realities and their types briefly. It also explains how they are impacting the future and XR applications.

What is extended and digital reality?

Digital reality is a word used to describe a collection of reality-creating technologies such as augmented reality, mixed reality, virtual reality, 360-degree video, and other upcoming immersive technologies that can construct a completely artificial virtual environment using computer-generated content.

Extended reality is a new technology phenomenon that sits upon the pillars of virtual reality, augmented reality, and mixed reality. All real and virtual mixed environments, as well as human-machine interactions, created by computer technology and wearables, are referred to as XR. Data becomes a memorable experience thanks to extended reality.

Extended reality collects a large amount of data from a large number of items at the same time and in the same location. It creates a holographic image from them. With the help of these holograms, a fictional world may be built that can interact with real items and people. Supporting technologies for XR platforms are fast being developed, ranging from high-performance hands-free headsets to AI-enabled tools for gathering data and translating it into extended reality environments.

When technologies like augmented and virtual reality were being employed by developers and tech companies all over the world, the notion of Extended Reality (XR) emerged. Extended Reality (XR) has been used in many sci-fi films, although it is considerably different in the real world than it is in the movies.

Types of Extended Reality

There are three types of extended reality on the market right now, each with a different level of interaction between the virtual and real worlds.

Augmented Reality (AR)

Virtual objects and thoughts are projected into the real environment in augmented reality. Augmented reality does not immerse us in virtual or computer-generated environments, but rather generates a sense of illusion in digital devices. Users can still engage in both dimensions and have access to the real world. Due to their accessibility, AR technologies have been evolving at a far faster rate than other forms of extended reality in recent years.AR solutions are commonly integrated with smartphones, which the vast majority of users already own. The most well-known example is Pokémon-GO, which utilizes augmented reality to let people interact with both the real and virtual worlds via digital devices. Other instances of augmented reality include the filters seen in many apps; these just provide the impression of being there when they are not.

Virtual Reality (VR)

Virtual Reality, or “VR,” nearly totally replaces the actual world by generating unique, interactive virtual realms for users to enter. People who use VR, unlike those who use AR, require specifically designed hardware, such as headsets and sensors. A computer connection is also required for some devices. The images are primarily computer-generated, and the artificial things are supposed to appear real. Virtual reality is felt by the users to the fullest extent possible. Users will require special VR gear to immerse themselves in this environment, which will provide them with a 360-degree perspective of the virtual world. These devices are made to give users a very realistic illusion.
