63% of Orgs Use Cloud, IoT Without Proper Security
Security- the buzzword that accompanies every discussion regarding cloud, IoT and big data is surely becoming a major concern day by day as more and more companies are joining the exodus without taking the necessary measures. Recently, a harrowing report displayed a staggering 63% of the data that enterprises around the globe circulate in the name of IoT, cloud and big data are done so without minimal security in between.
The funny thing is, only a year ago, security became this object of concern that was troubling everybody apparently and suddenly, some wave has washed it off. Everyone is applying big data over the cloud and exchanging data in the name of IoT without any security solutions at place and the concern has gone out of the window. While it still shows a good 59% people, it is a major drop from the erstwhile 70% and only points to the changing equation.
The nature of concerns
While security remains the biggest concern on paper, several other concerns have emerged interestingly over the years which need to be introspected to understand why security is rapidly taking the backstage. Among them, a good many people, around 55%, complained about the lack of control to determine the data location. 57% people have also raised voice about the vulnerable infrastructure in use and surely storage and backup are the more important concerns than security for most of these people.
Why such apathy towards security?
One of the most important reasons, as pointed out by experts, is that the big names have a large pool of experts who can handle the most troublesome of situations. In short, these professionals can protect them from the basic DDoS attacks on-premise from various hackers. So, the public clouds and their big players are hardly worried about the security problems.
Big data is surely necessary, but it is more necessary to ensure that the data is not left to wander in the clouds. Such has been the case recently as 47% of the big data handlers use sensitive data in a non-protected manner which has been the primary concern as of now.
IoT is abundant with sensitive data
If big data and cloud is worrying, then wait till you reach the IoT statistics. 85% of the people use IoT technology and among them, 31% use unsecured, sensitive data in IoT scenario. IoT tools are even more vulnerable than cloud because they are simple sensors which mean there should be more security concern. However, the concern is even less than the big data sector with people even failing to identify what is insecure data.
Privacy concerns are also very low among IoT users which surely would propel the users to think twice about the IoT devices and participating in the IoT network. Fitness devices, power meters, and visual devices- everything that is connected in IoT network is extremely vulnerable precisely because of the lack of sensitivity on the part of data users.
