OpenAI’s ChatGPT API and Whisper API are now offered to developers at a discounted rate. The ChatGPT API, based on the gpt-3.5-turbo model, is available for 10% of the cost of the flagship model, as confirmed by Greg Brockman, OpenAI’s co-founder and president.

OpenAI announced — “ChatGPT and Whisper models are now available on our API, giving developers access to cutting-edge language (not just chat!) and speech-to-text capabilities. Through a series of system-wide optimizations, we’ve achieved 90% cost reduction for ChatGPT since December; we’re now passing through those savings to API users”. ChatGPT API has already been adopted by a few companies like Snap Inc, Quizlet, Instacart, Shop, and Speak. The API is 90% cheaper than existing GPT-3.5 models, making it a cost-effective solution for non-chat scenarios that require minimal code adjustment.

The pricing for ChatGPT API has been set at $0.002 per 1000 tokens. Developers will be given access to the stable gpt-3.5-turbo model, as well as the option to choose a specific version like gpt-3.5-turbo-0301, which will be supported until June 1.

Whisper is a speech-to-text model available via API, based on the large-v2 model. The API supports on-demand access and is priced at $0.006 per minute. It accepts various formats such as m4a, mp3, mp4, mpeg, mpga, wav, webm, and can be used for transcriptions or translations.

OpenAI has introduced several changes to make ChatGPT API and Whisper API more user-friendly for developers. These changes include a 30-day data retention policy by default, improved developer documentation, simplified terms of service, and usage policies. Additionally, the company will not use the data submitted through the API to develop the model unless explicitly permitted by the developer.
