Weekly Wellness Update — July 21 — Consistency!
Hey friends. This is my Weekly Wellness Update. If you want it in your inbox go here.
Good morning!
I realize over the course of my years, consistency has been the one thing that pretty much guarantees that I will achieve my goals. Committing to whatever I choose, for instance, practicing yoga for 20 years has made me a better yogi (and person for that matter). Training for marathons, triathlons and other races for over 17 years has increased my strength and endurance. Staying sober for almost 25 years has kept me sane, thankfully. I could go on, but being consistent is one of the greatest most definite paths to success in whatever you choose.
Here is my latest blog post all about Consistency.
Before we get to all the other great info I found this week, I wanted to let you know we had 2 slots open up on our Cooking Hiking Yoga Retreat here in Malibu next weekend July 27–30. If you’re a last minute person and want to join us, please let me know. We have an amazing weekend of health, cooking, hiking, yoga and all around fun planned! Either click the link above or just reply to this email.
Nutrition
As you may know, I’m a low carb guy, so I thought this article by Dr. Dean Ornish was very interesting. It’s all about good carbs for your gut. I’m definitely making sure I add them to my low carb ways!
Here is a great article depicting the reason one might want to limit carbs and eat more healthy fats. It’s short and explains the insulin hormone imbalance very well. It’s called Are You a Carboholic? Why Cutting Carbs is so Tough, by Gary Taubes. If you’re really interested in nutrition, you must google Gary Taubes, he’s written extensively on the benefits of low carb, healthy fat diets.
The CDC released a National Diabetes Report that shows over 100 million Americans have Diabetes or Pre-Diabetes (insulin resistance — which often becomes diabetes within 5 years). It it’s truly mind-blowing when you understand that 1 out of ever 3 people are or will be inflicted with this disease AND it’s preventable with diet and lifestyle changes. Please tell everyone you know to educate themselves and avoid becoming part of the tsunami of unhealthy people in our nation!
Meditation
Stress is one of the main culprits in living a healthy happy life. Whether you’re an athlete or not, this is a great article about adding just a few minutes of relaxation time or meditation to improve your focus and decrease your stress. They used University of Miami Football players as their test athletes. Pretty cool!
To Train an Athlete, Add 12 Minutes of Meditation to the Daily Mix
Exercise
High-Intensity Workouts May Be Good at Any Age. HIIT has been getting a lot of press over the last many years and continues to deserve it. I recent study in Japan using adults over 55 showed that HIIT improved their endurance and improved blood pressure levels. Also a study in mice showed that mice equivalent to humans aged 65 improved as well. A control group of mice showed all the signs of aging, decreased muscle mass, increased body fat, and decreased endurance. Yet the mice who did the equivalent of running uphill showed signs of being younger! So go get if folks! High Intensity Interval Training will help you improve your health!
Training
As I mentioned last week, I’m training for the Malibu Triathlon on September 17 and the Malibu Half Marathon on November 5. I started publicizing my workouts and inviting people to join. You can always follow me on Strava to see what I’m doing and I’ve been adding them to my Instagram stories and Facebook page.
