Michel Foucault is a curious person to bring up in a piece arguing for self-determination as he appears to be so much the product of his childhood in Nazi dominated France. The intellectuals of that generation seem to have been twisted by the circumstances of their childhoods in a way they could not recover from. They became the people the way the same way storm blasted trees sometimes survive in misshapen shapes.
