There’s a great deal more to say on this topic. It is now suggested that the “Little Ice Age” was caused, or exaggerated, by the regrowth of forests in Europe following the Black Death and in America following the collapse of the Native population due to European diseases after first contact.

Much of the difference between the American northeast and the west of Europe is due to the Gulf Stream — something that may be going away in the future. But it was also colder in Europe, I believe, during those early Colonial years. And while the reasoning above may have been faulty, they may have been doing the right thing for the wrong reasons — just from a climate perspective.
