How to iron a shirt

He taught me how to iron / dispose of creases / family heirlooms / His collar folded and stamped / a blue envelope / The darkness beneath that fold, how it was lifted /

He never took me aside to explain the stillness of shirts in a wardrobe / creases that drop from fabric / stunned birds /

He taught me how to press a line down the length of each sleeve / lines I loved until I made love in someone else’s clothes /

We need more creases / more evidence of contact / I’m going round there to tell him
