How Long Does It Take to Get 1k Twitter Followers?

Real engagement only. Follow for follow doesn’t count.

I spent most of my day fooling around on Twitter, I don’t know if that counts as work or not. Eventually, I’d like to get 1000 followers on twitter organically.

The idea with that is basically to write an article, then make a small course then sell that for extra income. Every article I’ve seen includes that silly follow for follow strategy. I’m assuming

  1. You’re not already famous
  2. You have something that makes people want to follow you.

No follow for follow

It’s pretty well documented that if you just follow any account at random, you can get those one-thousand followers in a month.

Even here on Medium, where people often say that this strategy doesn’t work — I saw about a 30% conversion rate after just going on stories that have hundreds of claps and following everyone that clapped.

Follow for follow works if you only want followers.

I don’t want followers, I want an audience. People who are interested in the content I’m putting out. Gaining a few hundred followers here on Medium didn’t really translate to any gains in views, reads or claps.

It was only after reading Leona BritsCleansing My Medium Following Was Reinvigorating that I gave up on the strategy. It’s really not worth making a social network you’re actively using fill up with things you’re not interested in. It’s a quick way to burn out.

Get organic followers

These followers are the holy grail when it comes to followers. These are the people that are actually interested in you — or at least the content you’re putting out.

I need to get 100 followers by Monday (4 days after this article was published) without following too many people.

I’m not sure that this will work. I’m in a crazy place in life right now, and to me, it seems like the perfect turmoil to build a following.

So, I’m going to use today to announce a research project. How many followers can I get in one month? Are the steps repeatable? How far can I go without following people to get followers? It seems like the default on twitter is follow for follow, I don’t think that’s really useful for me.

Engaging with Twitter

The idea is to see how far engagement will take me. How long does it take to become an influencer?

I don’t want to find just anybody. I want to find the people I can relate to and that relate to my work. I want to find an audience, not just random people. People who like my style of writing and the things I have to say.

I don’t want to fill a timeline with things I don’t care about, because at the end of the day I’m just gonna stop using it if it looks like that.

I want to use Twitter to create an environment that piques my interest and is interested in the content I put out. That’s my bare minimum requirement for using twitter.

Can I make a wildly successful funzone? I bet I probably can do at least something provided I’m not delusional and people actually find me interesting. Why would I gamble against myself though, selfishness is called self-love when it’s in healthy doses.
