I am using a 4 year old Sony Vaio with Windows 10(upgraded from Windows 8) on it. It has got just 4 GB of RAM. It does not run very slow but it is definitely not as fast as it used to be when it was new.
Then came the Arch Linux based distro called: “Antergos”. I dual booted my lappie and have both Windows 10 and Antergos running. Must say, Antergos feels like an upgrade over Windows. I am logging in to Antergos almost every time I turn my lappie on
Adding and removing programs is such a breeze. I am not a hard core Linux user but this never made me feel dumb. All options can be customized starting from look and feel of the desktop panels, icons, animations etc.
The biggest advantage with Antergos has been that it uses very less RAM. Right now I am using hardly 25% of my 4BG of RAM and I have A browser with 8 windows open, VScode and Atom editors open, a Terminal window and a file explorer open.
Hardware wise my Sony Vaio is solid. Its Keyboard though not backlit, feels nice to use and still works well(after 4 years).
I am saying all this because I think one should not hurry in buying a new laptop just because it has less RAM or Processor of low frequency. Buy a laptop when your hardware goes kaput :P
Happy coding :)
