Feedback

For an artist, or for any creative person for that matter, a feedback loop is important. When you start creating something, doesn’t matter what it is, if you’re able to see it in the flesh and blood as soon as you work on it, it gives you a sense of satisfaction, a sense of accomplishment. This then further fuels your desire to create which in turn results in more gratification.

Great art produced will always follow this process of create…feedback…feel good… re-create. The more the artist is closer to his or her creation, the more satisfying the process feels. It’s also easier. If the feedback is delayed, more often that not, the creator loses interest in the creation itself as it doesn’t give him(or her) the sense of accomplishment and feeling of greatness.

However, there’s a second twist to this tale. Delayed gratification. This is one of the toughest things to balance with the sense of accomplishment and resultant creation of good art. More delayed the gratification is, less is the chance of great art produced, as there’s no re-iteration. A great artist will learn to balance this over time, stretching his gratification horizon longer over time, while maintaining the quality of art.

This is one of the prime reasons why people with a creative bent of mind are more comfortable with professions like Writing, Painting, even Designing UI/UX to an extent. They feel closer to their creation and they like the process. The gratification they receive fuels and enables them to create and iterate fast on their art, starting a sort of a chain reaction.Professions like Number Crunching or Software Engineering is best left to the ones with the more Analytical bent of mind.

However, if you’re a creative person who wants to use skills like Software to incorporate art into your projects, you have an uphill battle. You have to really try hard and widen your gratification horizon. This is a very tough and unrewarding endaevor for many, and is the prime reasons teams exist. This is one of the prime reasons why startups that create beautiful experiences for their consumers deserve all the credit they get.

Having a quick feedback loop is important, and the shorter the gratification horizon is, the better the creation gets, for any creator. It’s this idea that made me think of making something to help Technologists create great art in the modern world, in the form of Technology that can help change the world.
