In some instances the rocks are hidden, and don’t appear until the sound of splintering wood reaches the safety of the cockpit.

In those situations orderly abandonment is essential to helping others offload, preserve whatever is of value, and allow the captain(s) to salvage what dignity can be maintained.

Success if awfully hard. Failure is often harder.
