The Bhutanese national dress, consisting of Gho and Kira. Gho are the those dress those who used to wear by our gentlemen and Kiras are those dress who used to wear by our beautiful women. Our national dress have many significant such as Bhutanese culture, tradition, and identity. The colors, patterns that are used in designing Bhutanese dress represent region of the people and social status of people etc. Bhutanese national dress were made from local materials and designs were based on the geography of our country. Our Bhutanese national dress was introduced during the 17th century by Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyal. Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyal introduced the Gho and Kira to create a distinct Bhutanese identity and promote unity among the diverse ethnic groups within the country.

1. Cultural Identity

Gho and Kira are symbols of Bhutanese culture identity. Other countries don’t have garments like our Bhutan. Gho and Kira have unique and beautiful designs which help us to create a unique identity from the entire world. Moreover, Gho and Kira help to attract tourists. Tourists especially visit our country to explore our beautiful culture.

2. National Pride

The national dress is a source of pride for Bhutanese citizens. When Bhutanese people wear the gho and kira, they are expressing their pride in their culture and heritage. This helps to keep our culture alive and it can make Bhutanese more proud. We feel pride when we see other foreigners and tourists wearing our Gho and Kira. Bhutanese national dress is a powerful symbol of national pride. It also helps to teach our children about our culture, promote traditional arts and crafts and to encourage a sense of pride in Bhutanese culture.

3. Promotion of Handicrafts

The fabrics used to make the kira and gho are traditionally hand woven, using a variety of techniques and materials. This requires a high level of skills and helps to sustain the traditional handicrafts of Bhutan. The designs of the Kira and Gho are often based on traditional and symbols which helps to preserve Bhutanese culture and heritage.

4. Tourism

Bhutanese national dress is one of the main sources of revenue growth. It helps in attracting tourists, where in return we get money. Visitors are influenced by the beauty and uniqueness of the Gho and Kira.

5. Promote uniformity and Equality

The Gho and Kira reflect traditional gender roles in Bhutanese society. Bhutanese government has taken steps to promote the wearing of national dress. To be a uniform government requires all government officials and employees to wear national dress on formal occasions. Not only to make uniform but to set an example to other citizens and to promote the value of equality.

Bhutanese national dress has many important significance. Gho and Kira give promotion to culture and heritage and promote pride. Since our national dress is different from other countries, it helps us to create identity from another country’s citizens. It is important to preserve our national dress because it helps in growth of our country’s revenue.
