A little about me…
Welcome! My name is Tephanie Martinez. I don’t have much experience with ethnic/immigrant press but I am familiar with newspapers from another country. It started with an app called WhatsApp. WhatsApp is a service provided through smartphones that lets people communicate with anyone and everyone. I use it to communicate with family living in Mexico. I have many relatives that live in Sinaloa and Jalisco who send me links (through WhatsApp) of articles from a news source called El Debate. Sadly, I’ve noticed the crime rates in Sinaloa have increased that a recent article quoted the U.S State Department advising people not to travel to Sinaloa, Cancun, Michoacan etc. It gets a little disappointing knowing that friends and family who live in Mexico can be in danger.

To me, ethnic media is a way to stay informed or understand what it happening in a community. In an article by the Los Angeles Times, they describe ethnic media as a way of serving to a community where they receive their daily news, weather reports, job listings, housing, recommendations to restaurants and other necessities. One of the stories that stood out was about a Chinese women who found a website called Chineseinla.com that would eventually help her find a significant other. The website recommended a dating website called 2RedBeans that is designed for Chinese men and women. I believe that parallel language can shift to ethnic media because these outlets are created by people of a certain race to help those who immigrate from other countries.
I’ve chosen LA Watts Times and Latino LA. LA Watts Times caught my attention because I wasn’t aware that Watts had their own news subscription. It was nice to see that the database contained information not only for the African American community but also the community of Watts. Sometimes some people have this misrepresentation of Compton and Watts but this newspaper shows and tells us the positives happening within the community. Latino LA is a news outlet for the Latino community living in Los Angeles. When I opened the website the first article I saw was about a Pico Rivera Student receiving a $100,000 scholarship towards his college education. As someone who appreciates their education this news article made me extremely happy for this young male.
