Level up at Momoland tomorrow

Torch is interested in not just the practical uses of technology but technology’s role in play and, conversely, play’s role in developing technology. As we’ve found ourselves at Torch, unstructured goofing around is just as valid as highly detailed user interviews and exhaustive testing when it comes to uncovering new uses and spurring ideas for new features.

Art often sits between the practical and the playful — full of intention but also not burdened by any inherent need to “pay for itself” or find a mass market. As such, it is important that Torch be accessible to artists and empower creators while avoiding the pitfalls of becoming another prototyping device for obtuse industrial use cases.

So when we got the opportunity to sponsor the work of internationally-recognized artist and former co-worker of mine at Wieden+Kennedy, Momo Pixel, we jumped at the chance. Momo Pixel’s latest installation event, Momoland level 4, takes place this Thursday, September 6th, at Ground Kontrol in Portland.

Momo is the creator of the well-received video game Hair Nah, and her art has been displayed in galleries both in the US and abroad.

I caught up over email with Momo who, though crazy busy with preparations for the the event, answered a couple of questions about both her aspirations and the role mobile AR will play in reaching them.

TH: What do you hope people from our core audience of designers will take away from Momoland?

MP: I will hope that they take away imagination. To be more imaginative. Try new things and grow. To have big dreams and shoot for the stars. Momoland is a world that I’m trying to grow and build. It’s like Star Wars before the technology existed to do it the full way they wanted. It’s great but as time goes and technology advances, so will Momoland!

TH: How do you see yourself using 3D and mobile AR for your own work in the future?

I want to use 3D to help me create models for my future toys and worlds. But also use it to create 3d structures. My first iteration of Momoland (lvl 4) included creating a 3D city, building it out then using mobile AR to animate it and help it come alive. Basically I want to think of more ways to implement both mediums and challenge me to be more creative.

Magic awaits, so get off your booty and experience the next level of Momoland. Meet the iconic artist, behold the incredible pixel art, and say hello to some Torchers — see you there!
