Dear Child,
 You and your friend Audrey are very lucky. You have been given chance at an education, and both have had a lot of help with that. Living with the parents, on their insurance. Grants and scholarships-these are also a redistribution of wealth. You have been well fed, gone to good schools, live in a nice home, and in a good neighborhood. You didn’t have to go to work as a teenager at the first job you could get, full time, then not get paid enough for a decent life. Lots of doors opened for you. Same with most of your grandparents and those before them. But, don’t forget, some of them lied, cheated, stole, and had serfs and slaves that put you where you are now. That is Laissez-Faire capitalism, and is too shortsighted to work for the long term. 
 I do know you worked hard and I want you to be rewarded. I don’t want you to give any of your GPA to Audrey. We know that is communism and that it’s too unfair and conducive to totalitarianism to work. I do want you to help that other kid that is trying so hard. Give her a pen, a used book, or help with an assignment, whatever you can.

What I want for you is to live in a country where you don’t have to be afraid of having everything taken from you if you get sick, or laid off, or old. I hope no one will pay you less, or treat you badly because you are a woman or another color or religion. I don’t want you to work your whole life, then be thrown away when you start wearing out. I want you to live in a country where crime rates drop, employment rises, health statistics are improving, STEM scores and literacy are the highest in the world, and we stay competitive. A place with safe roads, bridges, airplanes, food, medicine, clean air and water. Where person does not have to live surrounded by fear and hate. Because in this kind of world there will be less cruelty, crime, and disease. We have been living in a rising tide country for over 200 years and it is what really made us great. When you see that the people around you are working in a stable economy and are happier, healthier, unafraid and able to pay more taxes, you will be safer and wealthier in more than just money.
 So, don’t panic! This isn’t the Titanic! That’s just some rich guy, his friends, and your friend Audrey trying to get us to fight over the lifeboats, while they take off with the ocean liner. That is oligarchy and it, also, doesn’t work. I would rather have the maids, sailors and musicians with us, if we ever do have to get in the boats. Most of them row pretty hard.
 Even though your Republican Papa might mean well, sometimes the world is not all black and white. Our sense of justice requires us to look at the bigger picture, the long term, our hearts and beliefs, as has been done for us. It’s not always easy or convenient. Look toward the Golden Rule, not any political party. That’s where the light really is. See it?
