I think there were many times when Will felt the dogs were his only friends. The fact was, Will had many human friends who tried to help him at various times—sometimes in the form of money or favors, providing food or intervention (with housing resources and other entities), and also by spending time with him so he wouldn’t feel alone.

The mental illness component of Will’s story underscores why homeless programs (at least here in Seattle) are not “one size fits all.” Some people will always prefer following their own paths whether or not a seemingly perfect solution is available.
