The Buena Vista Apartments has been an iconic building on the corner of 124 Street and 102 Avenue for over 100 years. The apartments has been home to popular local businesses such as the Glenora Bed amp; Breakfast, The Glenora Bistro and Cafe DeVille. Although the building was an architectural masterpiece on the outside, the interior of the building was extremely old and facing a plethora of issues. The building has a history of heating, plumbing and electrical issues and was demolished early Friday morning. Business owners have reported to have invested tens of thousands of dollars in the last 7 years to keep everything up to code. For those of us who loved the Buena Vista Apartments and are sad to see it be demolished, there is positive news. Although the building has been demolished, a development company based out of Vancouver, Edgar Development Corporation, has plans to incorporate the beloved architecture in its new 25 storey building. The new development will be used for both residential and commercial use and will include commercial space on the main floor and 240 livable units above. Maintaining the historic preservation of an iconic building in Edmonton has been done in the past with the demolition and redevelopment of the Kelly Ramsey Building downtown. The developers of that project were able to keep the outer walls of the building almost entirely intact. Edgar Development plans to do the same thing with the Buena Vista Apartments and maintain the main street commercial architecture while at the same time transitioning the area to accommodate a modern and urban lifestyle in such a prime location in Edmonton. Construction of the new MacLaren Building began in July of this year and the 22,500 square foot building is expected to be completed in early 2018.nbsp; What are your thoughts on the demolition of the Buena Vista Apartments and plans to redevelop this historic building?
