Mileage: 101.25km

Easy mileage is an important factor of the training program as it is needed to support the harder, faster mileage. One of my training tenets is to maintain a constant ratio of 80% easy mileage to 20% maximum higher intensity running to minimise over-training injuries, though with long tempos in the training means that sometimes tipping over that 20% threshold.

14km Tempo went better than the last week, out on a particularly windy day out on Albert Park. Starting into the wind was probably a good option to temper my pace early on. Without revealing my hand too much my pace hasn’t quite reached the speed as my half marathon PB would suggest I’m capable of, possibly out of the accumulated fatigue but perhaps out of current level of talent and ability. Thus I’ve learned to more realistic and flexible about my expectations about how I’ll go heading into Melbourne Marathon.

Trails have always been the surface my running ability has translated the least fluidly too. The challenge is managing the craggy terrain while pushing the pace on such a short run, which I guess the benefit is that the trail conditions your legs, making them stronger.

Longest long run to date started on Sunday morning from Brighton Beach, doing an out-and-back to the sunrise hitting the city before joining the rest of the crew to enjoy the 35km long run

Absorbing all this mileage this week will be the priority to recover into the next phase of training.
