How To Set Up The Perfect Instagram Profile To Attract Followers
Setting up your Instagram profile might seem like an easy thing to do, but in order to attract the right kind of followers, you need to have a profile that stands out from the rest.
In this post, you will learn how to set up the perfect Instagram profile to attract the followers you want!
An important thing to remember before setting up your profile is to choose your niche. The more specific you are the better. Think about what kind of content you want to post and who it is for.
It’s easy to think that you need to please everyone and that your content is for people of all ages, all around the world, with all kinds of interests.
If you are trying to please everyone you won’t please anyone!
Decide who your ultimate follower is, and what you want that specific person to do when coming to your page. Then adjust the language and style of your profile to meet that single person’s needs and desires.
If you are an influencer who is sharing beautiful selfies, it’s still important to stand out from the other influencers on social media. Therefore you should focus on 1 niche within the influencer category. On my personal account as an influencer, I have chosen to talk to young adults who are sick of their 9–5 life and want to be able to travel whenever they want and work with what they love.
Knowing this, I have a more clear direction in my posts and I know how to communicate with my followers.
Most importantly, I know who my avatar (desired follower) is and what they care about, so I have set up my profile to attract those people and have them follow me.
I can not stress this enough as it’s a common misunderstanding that you should be as generic and broad in your content and description as possible on Social Media.
Here is an example of an extremely targeted account that has a huge following:
Once you have decided what your account is about and who it is for, you can start setting up your profile.
First, you need to download the app to your phone and choose to sign up. This takes about 5 minutes and is super easy to do.
1. Public vs Private Profile.
During signup, you choose if you want to have a public or private account.
If your profile is private, the people that are coming to your page will not be able to see your posts or interact with you in any way. They will see your profile picture and description, but that’s it.
If you are a business you should keep your profile open for people to decide if the content that you are sharing is interesting enough for them to follow you. After all, if your followers don’t like your content they will never become clients or customers. It’s also easier to get new followers if you have a public profile.
On the other hand, if you are a private person who would only want to share your content with people you know, you might consider having a private profile. In that case, you have to approve the people who want to follow you before they can see your posts or interact with you.
You have more control over who is seeing your posts, and for some, this feels safer.
2. Profile Name
When choosing your name, keep it recognizable and searchable. If you are a brand, the name of the company should be good enough, but sometimes you need to add another word if your name is already taken. Choose a word that is searchable and relevant to your content. Think about what words people would search for to find your type of content.
If you are an influencer who wants to use your real name, instead of adding a number or some complicated formatting, simply add a niched word that you think people would search for to find you.
Try to keep your name easy to tell people without having to add complicated explanations to how it’s spelled. When talking to someone who asks for your Instagram you want it to be as easy as possible to say.
Make sure to match your name with the content and theme of your account.
Here is an example of a good name that has 2 searchable and niched words in it.
3. Profile picture
Your profile picture needs to stand out from the rest on Instagram, as this is the only picture shown in the users’ feed when you engage with them.
A business should always have the logo in high quality as a profile picture and have the image or text visible in a circle shape on a small screen.
As an influencer or private user, you should have a high-quality picture of yourself that is clear and bright enough to be seen on a small screen. You can either choose a clear or white background to make your face stand out, or you can choose the same color theme as the rest of your account to give an overall look to your account.
Let’s say you have chosen a theme of your profile where you share travel pictures with a blueish theme and filter, then a blue background would look great.
Here is one account with a white background that makes the profile picture pop out and looks very nice.
You can also play around with different seasons and change your profile picture after different holidays. This is common during pride festivals, Christmas etc.
If you don’t feel like changing your profile picture that often, use one that is evergreen and works all year around. The most important thing is that it is visible on a small screen and stands out on peoples notifications.
4. Business VS personal account.
You can choose to have a business or personal account on Instagram. There are pros and cons of both depending on your goals and purpose. Choose what suits you the best.
Setting up a business account is very easy, but you need to connect it to a facebook page. As a business, you should definitely have a business account as this will give you more credibility.
There are also useful features that come with having a business account:
- You can see stats on who your audience is and when they are the most active. Simply click the settings tab on the top right of your profile and choose “insights” to get an overview of your stats.
- You can add important info about your business such as location, email and phone number that are easily accessible with one click at the bottom of your profile.
- You get access to real-time metrics on how your stories and promoted posts are performing throughout the day.
- With a business account, you can create ads in only a few clicks.
If you want to track how many clicks you get on the link in your profile, you can use bit.ly to add a tracker. That way you can see exactly how your users are engaging with your link and use that to improve your conversions and sales through Instagram.
If you are not interested in using these features and don’t want people to see your contact information, you can keep your account personal.
5. Profile Title
You have 30 characters to use for the title of your description. Just as with the name of the account this area can be used to add searchable words that are niched down to what your account is about.
If you are a business you should use your business name and 1 or 2 keywords. The reason I’m doing this is that the name and username are the only fields that Instagram considers in search queries. So if you plan to be found by a certain keyword make sure to use it here.
As an influencer, you can have your own name added with a name that describes your chosen niche, for example, “Digital Nomad”.
6. Profile Bio
You have 150 characters to describe your account and make the people visiting it interested enough to follow you. That is why it is so important to use this area as smart as possible.
Think about who your audience is and try to make them want to follow you. It’s important to make a solid first impression. You want new visitors to get an idea of what your account is about in an instant.
The description is one of the most important steps when creating a good Instagram profile, so make sure you take time to think about this.
If you know a few tricks you can convey everything you need to in order to make a lasting impression on your visitors.
Here are some things that your bio should contain:
– What your account is about/what your business does
– A call to action (ask the visitors to do something)
– 1–2 branded hashtags (hashtags that are created by you for your brand)
– The benefits of the product your selling or your personal skills.
– Contact information.
– 1–2 targeted keywords
Using keywords in your bio won’t improve your searchability on Instagram as it’s not taken into account, however, it will help your followers connect with you easier since everyone is looking for something online. It will also help define your business better and easier. A great tip to make your bio look attractive is to copy and paste your bio on a desktop instead of in your phone. You can use either notes, notepad, Evernote or even Facebook to write your description before posting it on Instagram.
You can add bullets, emojis or symbols to make your bio more inviting to read and feel free to play around with different formatting until you have a style that matches your account.
Note: You will not see the formatting on a desktop, but when you switch to your phone you will!
You can change the font of your bio using third-party apps, such as Textizer.
Having a link in your bio is a no-brainer if you have a website or somewhere you want to lead your followers, but you are only allowed to have one link in your bio. Don’t worry, there are several free apps that you use to add more than one link to your bio:
7. Post your first content
When starting a new account it’s important to start posting quickly, as no-one wants to follow an empty account.
Plan and post as many posts as you can in the beginning, and remember to think about the overall style and look of your account. Choose 1 or 2 filters that you use continuously throughout your account to get a professional look.
Finally, after setting up a killer profile and posting your first posts, you should start thinking about spreading your profile name on other social media and to people you meet.
If you have a great profile and put some time into engaging with other accounts in your niche, you should be able to grow your account pretty quickly and get the followers you want.
