Charge for your time?

Zach Dicklin

Years ago, I had a boss that told me: “Never work on a project for stock.”

I proceeded to ignore his advice several times throughout the last decade. In all those cases I did, I have nothing to show for it. Granted, like you, I developed my skills and it’s not something to scoff at.

Charging people for my time (on the contrary) has made me a much better planner, developer, and business person. When the project inevitably flatlines or fails, I have no regrets (I got paid!). Furthermore, this has plugged me into spaces where I realize there is more room for innovation. If I decide to pick up the product sword again in the future, I will have new avenues, partners, and skills on which to launch it. Also:

Write less code. If you can’t delegate it, it’s not going to work long-term.

Good luck man. I think it’s very cool that you’re being up front with it.
